Pistorius – It’s Up To You To Decide

Since the tragic death of Reeva Steenkamp, who was shot apparently inside the home of the “Blade Runner” Oscar Pistorius, there has been a frenzy of news activity speculating  as to what the chain of events was that actually led to her death. The media has also reported that Oscar Pistorius was in tears when in court to be charged with her premeditated murder. All very basic reporting.

Clearly, much of what has been reported thus far has been very factual as the world awaits further developments. The BBC has reported that guilty or innocent of the charge(s) that may be laid before him that Pistorius is effectively ruined as all of the sponsors will not wish to be associated with the events that he is now surrounded by. Twitter and other social media and “humour” websites have all seen fit to twist the events around in the effort to get a cheap laugh. Cheap? Yes cheap and morally bankrupt. Here we have a young woman who has died and yet some people have seen fit to score cheap points by mocking her and her death from the relative safety of their phones, tablets and computers.

Yet for all of this the producers of a South African reality TV programme “Tropika Island of Treasure” are going to broadcast this weekend an edition of the show (or series I don’t know) recorded shortly before Reeva Steenkamp’s death. Apparently her family want this to go ahead, but quite why mystifies me. True, it would show her in a happy frame of mind and would perhaps help to ease their pain, but to share that with the wider viewing public at present serves no purpose that I can see.

Pistorius is a real icon, hero and inspiration to South Africans in particular and disabled athletes have found his fame has helped to bring their efforts into the mainstream. Yet behind his athletic heroics who is the man? Like so many people in the public with a huge PR machine behind them, do we really know who they are? Will he get a fair trial for the crime(s) he is accused of? Well I suppose it depends on what is perceived as fair. Will the South African courts have sufficient strength to disregard the status of the accused and the victim and try the case purely on evidence?

Pistorios may not receive a fair trial because of who he is.

Did O.J. Simpson?

It’s up to you to decide.

Ciao for Now,

  1. The guys on C4’s “Last Leg” summed it up. Whatever happened it is devastating. Devastating for disabled sport, devastating for South Africa, devastating for Oscar himself but mainly for the family of a beautiful girl, who must be reeling from this horror.
Whatever happened we must remember someone has just lost their baby girl.

    It is very sad.

  2. Sadly true, the social media is so widespread can there ever really be an impartial, unbiased jury ?

  3. Be good to write an update to this Den, your thoughts on the verdict?
